True20 Open-License (exact wording)

Postby LaNotteEterna » Thu Mar 15, 2012 11:33 pm

Hi everyone, I hope I am writing in the right section and in case I'm not I wish to apologize in advance.

I have read the open-license page for True20, but I was not able to understand the exact wording we need to copy and paste into the book when we publish our book.

We intend to publish a setting based on True20, and extract some material from the various True20 books (Adept, Expert, Warrior) to include into the setting.

Can you please copy and paste the exact wording we need to include in the book in order to proceed with publication?

Thank you!

As I understand it, you need to copy and paste the entire license. This includes all works in the Copyright Notice list, because some content from each of those works was used in the book from which you are drawing material (or was used in some other book in that list, etc.). If you're borrowing from more than one source for a given book, then you need to merge the copyright lists from all those sources. Finally, per item 6 of the license, you need to add an entry for your new book to the end of that list, so that it can be credited properly in any future work that draws upon it.

And yes, that means you'll need to reserve a minimum of two pages for the True20 License. The core True20 System has many parents, and supplements for it have borrowed from even more sources.

I hope that helps! (At least until one of the Ronins sees this and can correct or expand upon what I've written here.)

That's exactly why I love True20 and want to renovate players' interest here in Italy. Thank you for your help, I'll wait confirmation from one of the "Ronins" then before sending out the OK to the publisher.

GR setup the license so they don't have to verify product or licenses. :D I don't think they will "get back to you" except maybe to say they don't review products.

Setting up section 15 in the OGL is simple. Include everything from section 15 from the works you're deriving from (no need for repeats!!), then include your work last with the same info.

I like to copy everything out into a Word document, eliminate duplicates, and then order alphabetically keeping the SRD stuff at the top of the list. I've seen many publishers use 8pt font but with the list of resources used, I would budget two pages for the OGL.

Also, if you have ANY IP (intellectual property) be sure to call it out at the beginning of the book. This includes proper names, setting material, etc. You only have to designate the rules stuff as OGL.

Good luck!

Hello again everyone!

We have almost finished translating the Adept, Expert and Warrior handbooks (only fantasy/middle ages related features, we are excluding everything else) into Italian and revising the True20 Adventure Roleplaying book that another publisher in Italy had poorly translated.

Then, we are going to join all the 4 books into one and attach to it a setting. This very tick book will take its name from the setting. I hope we got the Open-License right, as we want to promote True20 in Italy as best as we possibly can. :yar:
